Bar tables are superb options for any home, providing you with a stylish and practical bar area. These tables are the perfect accompaniment to any bar stool, as they have a top height of 90cm and are designed to be used with a seat height of around 65 to 75 cm, making them ideal for fixed height stools of around 70cm, or the more dynamic gas lift stools which can be raised or lowered.

The beauty of a bar table as opposed to a bar counter is that they provide you with a kitchen or breakfast bar that can be moved around, allowing you endless possibilities and not rooting you to one spot. This can be especially handy as the table can be moved around a kitchen or dining room until you find the perfect spot for people to congregate.

The materials that these high tables are made from stand them in good stead, being very durable and easy to clean. Stone, glass and ABS resin tops are very hard wearing and resilient to staining, needing only a wipe with a damp cloth should any spillages occur. This makes them quick and easy to keep in pristine condition and allows you to focus on other things, making them perfect for high impact environments such as a busy domestic kitchen.

Stone tops are at the high end of the range, providing a classy look and solid feel. From black granite to white marble and everything in between, they provide a natural touch but with superb hardiness, making these tables highly sought after.

Impact resistant ABS plastic is injection moulded into the required form. It is much lighter than stone and so makes the tables much more mobile, but is still very resistant to scratches and scrapes. Due to the nature of this surface, it comes in a medley of colours and provides a vibrant touch to any room.

Glass is the most popular material for bar table tops however. These toughened glass tops come in a range of finishes; clear class is light and airy whilst smoked glass adds a touch of sultry colour, with opaque black glass giving an almost piano black, gloss appearance. Finally, sparkle glass has a crystalline structure within the top that catches and plays with the light, throwing up little specks of colour.

The shape of the top is also important; round tables are very fluid and easy on the eye, whilst also allowing for any combination of stools happily seating many people. Square top tables, however, usually dictate the number of stools you can have, working best in pairs. Placed at opposing sides of the table, square tops easily accommodate up to 4 occupants and give a more structured look than their circular counterparts.

Finally, if you are after a little more height, there is another range of bar tables known as poseur tables. These are held at 100cm, akin to a commercial bar counter, and are designed to be stood at but also work beautifully with high bar stools.

My favourite film of all time is Fried Green Tomatoes, and as it happens fried green tomatoes are one of my fave appetisers too. I happened upon a new recipe that eliminates one of main parts of these tasty treats, the fried part, and replaces it with a much more health conscious approach. Another interesting twist I should mention is that they are battered in polenta, something I do not use all that often, but do like. I made them last weekend and can only make a glowing report.

The ingredients are as follows:

one large egg beaten

salt and pepper

about 2 tablespoon all purpose flour

2 tablespoon polenta

2 medium green tomatoes

1/4 cup milk

The preparation:

beat egg and milk together

mix the flour with polenta and add salt and pepper

dip sliced green tomato in egg and milk then in polenta and flour

use an indoor grill double sided and grill for 8-10 minutes

First off, you may not even know that there are several different types of cooking thermometers. But there are in fact the traditional, instant read, digital probe, laser and disposable kinds. And yes, you guessed it some people have strong preferences regarding these choices. Here are some basics things to know about the varying thermometers that will assist you in choosing, the one, or ones that best suit your needs.

The traditional are quiet inexpensive, and are self explanatory, but will take longer than most others to give you a reading. The instant read are well, really fast, or as the title describes, instant. As such they are highly regarded by many chefs. The digital probe often have an alarm that you can set to go off at a certain temperature. It has a cable that connects to a port outside of the oven so you can keep an eye on it without having to open the oven. The cables are known to get excessively hot, so they are not considered a good idea if there will be small kids around. The laser are able to read only surface temperatures, so they are more useful for things like chocolate and oil. The disposable are strips that are inserted into the item to be monitored and will change colour when they reach the set temp. Then you can chuck them to avoid cross contamination. Note that they are normally not that long, so they are not able to handle large cuts accurately.

The small appliances we keep in our kitchens provide us with a lot of useful assistance in our baking and cooking. Several of them can be quite pricey, and as such we should treat them well, and maintain them properly. If you do this then they should last a long time, and assist you for many more meals to come.

To keep them in good shape, wipe them down regularly with a cloth that has a bit of dishwashing liquid and water on it, or baking soda and water on it. Then follow that with a wiping with a dry cloth. Remember to clean off the bottoms of these appliances too, as those left on the countertops accumulate things underneath them, and spills can affix themselves to the bases too.

In addition, you may want to put squares or circles of felt on the corners or legs of these items. This will help to protect them from cooking debris, and raise them above most spills. These simple tips should aid in extending the life of your appliances.

Kitchen sponges can harbour germs galore, but that does not mean that you must constantly replace them with brand new ones. Instead all you need to do to get them back to being the cleaning machines that you know they can be is to complete a couple of quick steps. Pretty soon you will have disinfected those sponges so well that even uncooked chicken liquid will be eliminated.

Surprisingly enough there are really only two teensy weensy steps to getting your sponges back to legitimate working order. The first of the two is to soak the sponge in a solution of part water, part lemon juice. You could also use white vinegar in place of the lemon, but it smells up the kitchen in my opinion. Whereas, the lemon juice, fills the kitchen with a nice refreshing scent.

Next, pop that sponge into the microwave for a full minute. In order to get the environment just right, the microwave needs to be on high heat. Allow the sponge to cool down in the microwave prior to removing it.

It is time to get your kitchen on order for the New Year, so here are few things to add to your to do list that you might be avoiding. Clean the oven and the stove completely, organise your pantry, and throw out expired food, put new baking soda in both the fridge and the freezer, take everything out of the cabinets and wash down the cabinets, reorganise your spices, wipe the ceiling, take out the shelves and removable compartments in the fridge and wash with hot water and good cleaning product. Then, if you are still in fighting form, take out all your pots and pans and soak in hot water, rearrange on rack or cupboard, polish silver, and copper. While this may seem like it is a lot of monotonous work, it is an excellent time to be compiling your list of goals for the year.

Grocery stores are making it increasingly easy for us to look like wizards in the kitchen. For the Christmas season, there are complete fancy cakes designed by famous chefs packaged up, and ready to be put together by us. These are not your common old Betty Crocker cakes, these are fashionable and the final product appears seriously complex. You do not end up with a basic pudding, you get something much more impressive.

While it might look like you must have taken a cooking course, or bought it premade and are trying to pull a fast one, you will have in fact made it easily by yourself. That is unless you have children who would like to participate in the baking, and this is just the project to get them involved in, because everything is already measured out. And though you may feel a tad sneaky for not having pulled out the cookbook or having slaved for hours to get this dynamite dessert, the truth is you really did make it. And, that is really the bottom line.

I adore wreaths, and thoroughly enjoy making new ones every chance I get. I even invite my girlfiends over every now and then for a wreath making party. This love affair means that I must find unconventional placements for the extra ones I want to display.

As such, I thought I would point out that while not many people do so, putting a wreath, or in my case wreaths, in the kitchen is a great way to switch up decorations frequently and easily. Plus, it brings forth some of the most adorable themes you can imagine.

Autumn is one of the most agreeable of seasons to create a kitchen wreath in my opinion. This is due to the abundance of great colours found out in nature, and the tie in with the kitchen being the place that you make use of so many of those colourful veggies.

For as long as I can remember, my mother and grandmother have had enormous candles burning in their kitchens. No matter what the season, a fluid fragrance has wafted, and created a homey appeal in this room in their homes. Neither woman followed in the footsteps of the other when it came to selection, but each made flawless choices.

My Mama never splurged on designer brands, instead she opted for the more decorative candleholders. This is what led to the tradition of my sisters and I trying to out do each other on her birthday by competing to find the most gorgeously packaged scented candles. This constant barrage of candles is probably what kept her kitchen more modern than any other grannys on the block.

As for my mom, well she kept the candles for another reason. It was not because she loved the flickering light, or even the plethora of scents to be chosen from. Oh no, she needed those candles. In the kitchen she was an adventurer, and the many burnt dishes declared it loud and clear. However, she became a master of hiding the aromatic sins of her foibles with the help from the folks at the candle factory.

The point is, while each may not have set out to build a standard of what a kitchen should be, they did. My sisters agree, candles offer a great deal to a home, and in a kitchen, they complete many duties beautifully. So, do not forget to include candles in your kitchen design.

While attending a wedding shower last weekend, I noted how many kitchen gifts were of the soft kind. What I mean is that over two thirds of the gifts included a textile of one sort or other. Though initially I attributed it to the relatively low cost of the items and their effective placement as filler in a gift bag, or box of hard items, this changed. In retrospect, I realized that my conclusion was not only hasty, but wrong.

As I returned home, and observed my own kitchen, I noticed that most of the pot holders, dish towels, placemats, and napkins I have were gifts. The point is that these crucial items are often overlooked by homeowners, or considered extravagances. Thus, people tend to make due with non-traditional items, or hold on to these things longer than they probably should after too much usage. Therefore, those friends and family who provide these for us are aware of this tendency, and their forethought is of great benefit to creating a good kitchen.
